The Österreich was the first large motor ship on Lake Constance, thus the most modern ship of the fleets of the three neighbouring countries Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The luxurious appearance of Austria inspired the passengers from the very beginning. After a long period of rest, it was extensively renovated and since 2019 has again been able to carry passengers across Lake Constance.

The steamship Hohentwiel and the MS Österreich complement each other ideally: in terms of technical history and art style history. Thus Austria is the direct successor of Hohentwiel. Both ships are about the same size or offer about the same number of seats at the table outdoors as below deck. Both ships offer the same comfort, Austria is barrier-free on the main deck. Since Austria has also been reconstructed to be winter safe, it can be operated all year round.

You can find an overview of all trips of the MS Austria here.

Like so many historical ships, the motor ship Austria should have been scrapped. After 80 years in the hardest operating service - as a passenger ship and icebreaker, after conversion to a torpedo launching ramp, planned sinking by the Nazis and further conversion under the deficiency conditions of the post-war period - the ship had reached its limit of use and was therefore in fundamental need of renovation, but this was no longer economically viable. But this ship was the first large diesel-powered passenger ship on Lake Constance; after it, no more steam ships were ordered, not on Lake Constance, nor on most Central European inland waterways. This ship is not only the direct successor of the most modern and last pre-World War I paddle steamer Hohentwiel on Lake Constance in terms of technical history, but also in terms of interior design: the Art Nouveau of Hohentwiel was followed by the Art Deco of Austria. Since emotions were also important on this ship, things were fortunately different and the MS Austria was extensively renovated... Many friends of this technical historical monument came together and founded the association "Freundeskreis MS Österreich e. V.", which was able to take over the ship after several difficulties and breathe new life into it.

You can find out more about the history and development of the project here.
