Castles and more

Meersburg’s particularly attractive position surrounded by steep vineyards on Lake Constance drew travellers even centuries ago. According to legend, the Merovingians built the first castle, whose medieval silhouette still dominates the town today. Quaint alleys with half-timbered buildings and picturesque squares surround the representative baroque buildings of the New Palace, the former Priests’ College and the Dominican Convent, while vantage points offer magnificent views of the lake and the Alps.

Culture in Meersburg

The living quarters and staterooms of the New Palace show how the Prince Bishops lived during the Baroque era. The “picture-book town” of Meersburg has always attracted artists, such as painters and writers. Visitors to historic Meersburg Castle can see the rooms where Germany’s greatest poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff once lived and worked.

Concerts at the New Palace and Open-air Music

The New Palace provides an elegant setting for music. Well-known musicians perform between May and December in the Hall of Mirrors with its brilliant acoustics, which are only surpassed by the outstanding views of the lake. The open-air concerts on the castle’s square are a highlight in summer.

Meersburg’s Museums

“VINEUM Bodensee – House of Wine, Culture and History”, set in the town’s newly restored cultural monument with the historic wine press from 1607 at its centre, is dedicated to the world of wine around Lake Constance. The Bible Gallery gives insight into the relationship between art and religion. For people interested in the history of airship navigation, the Zeppelin Museum displays historical collectors’ items from the time of the “flying cigars”.

Regional Wine in Meersburg

What better way to get to know a wine-growing region than by sampling its wines. The State Winery and Wine Growers’ Association hold wine-tasting sessions four times a week. Wine connoisseurs look forward to the traditional Lake Constance Wine Festival that takes place every year on the second weekend in September. Wine-growing estates from the Lake Constance region present a selection of their products accompanied by an entertaining programme of events and a wide choice of regional food.

Meersburg Therme

Meersburg Therme is a spa situated right on the shores of Lake Constance. The large indoor pool is connected to the outdoor pool so that visitors have the opportunity to swim outside and enjoy the unforgettable views of the lake, even during winter, as the water temperature is kept at 34°C all year round. Another highlight is the spacious sauna area with a choice of saunas and steam baths.
