Immerse yourself in the history of the city
Whoever arrives in Überlingen immediately immerses himself in the history of the former Free Imperial City. The former city fortification today forms a green belt around the old town and contributes significantly to the special atmosphere of the city. The Old Town is characterised by historic patrician houses, the impressive St. Nicholas Cathedral and the stately town hall with its late Gothic town hall. The city tours offered all year round provide an exciting insight into life in earlier times. Of course, the lake also attracts locals and guests to the almost 5 km long lakeside promenade, which is lined with many cafés and restaurants.
A garden city rich in tradition
Überlingen looks back on a long tradition as a garden city. As early as 1875, the town garden, which is under a preservation order, was laid out. Impressive tree giants are still witnesses of this time. Rocks, small winding paths and enchanted, flower-entwined arcades can be found on various levels. The favourable climate at the foot of the molasse rocks allows Mediterranean and exotic plants to thrive and an extraordinary collection of over 5000 cacti, which move out of the greenhouse and into the town garden every spring, can also be admired here. The signposted "Garden Culture Path" connects the most beautiful parks and gardens of the city over a length of around 4 km. Like a garden that is constantly evolving, Überlingen's green spaces continue to grow. In 2020, the first State Garden Show on Lake Constance will take place here, for which, among other things, a six-hectare shore park will be created and with which Überlingen will continue its tradition and continue to grow as a garden city.
Tip: Interesting facts and curiosities about the special botanical features of Überlingen's parks and gardens can be learned every Thursday from May to October at 15:00 during the garden tours.
Health and relaxation
Überlingen is also an ideal place to do something for your health. From early on Überlingen was considered a fashionable health resort and has been the only town in Baden-Württemberg to bear the title Kneipp Spa since 1955. Today, the focus of recreation seekers is on fasting and with an orthopaedic and internal aftercare clinic, Überlingen offers not only prevention but also the possibility of rehabilitation. The Lake Constance Thermal Baths, with their wellness area with three warm pools, seven different saunas, a sauna garden with direct access to the lake and a relaxation room with fireplace, are perfect for relaxing.
