Amidst the volcanic landscape of Hegau
Engen lies in the middle of the volcanic landscape of Hegau with its unique cone mountains. The historic old town of Engen is considered one of the best preserved medieval town ensembles in southern Germany.
An insider's tip for tourists
The city enchants many visitors with its Mediterranean flair amidst the leaning houses, bumpy alleys and cosy squares. Engen not only offers a medieval ambience but has also created a platform for modern art and culture in the historical setting. An exciting contrast to the old buildings is provided by the fountains designed by contemporary artists, which take up the medieval tradition of water supply. Six modern fountains have been created for the old town by famous sculptors such as Jürgen Goertz, Eichtersheim and Lutz Brockhaus, Darmstadt. A further eye-catcher is the artistically modern but also the historical signs and cantilevers at the individual specialist shops in the entire old town.
Cultural and leisure activities
A showcase example is the Engen + Galerie Municipal Museum, which has acquired an excellent reputation nationwide. The famous 14,000-year-old "Venus von Engen" can also be visited there.
The adventure pool attracts with its 89 meters long giant slide, the current channel, the children's paddling pool and much more to spend a few hours in the cool water.
The various city and adventure tours or an excursion to the local mountain Hohenhewen are also highly recommended. In the many pretty restaurants and cafés, guests are pampered in a cosy atmosphere and cultivated ambience.
Stone Age in the Engen Ice Age Park
A novelty in southern Germany is the ice age park "Petersfels", completed in spring 2003, a nature trail with trees, shrubs and grasses 15,000 years ago around the important primaeval site "Petersfels". The contrast between today's cultural landscape and the Late Ice Age conditions around the Petersfels is shown in a unique way. In about 1.5 hours, the family hikes along the circular path through the Ice Age Park. Numerous information boards explain the unique Ice Age Trail on the topics "Landscape of ice and water", "Ice Age hunters in Brudertal", "Autumn hunting", "Gnirshöhle" and much more!
