An extraordinary place in the canton of Thurgau
The Ittingen Charterhouse in Warth is an extraordinary place. The former monastery is nestled in the idyllic Thur landscape, just a few minutes' drive from Frauenfeld or Untersee. Monastic communities lived here for centuries, first the Augustinians, then the Carthusians. The area is home to two important cantonal museums: the Ittingen Museum and the Thurgau Art Museum.
The Ittingen Museum provides a lively insight into the history of the buildings and their inhabitants. In the barren monk's cells, you can relive how the Carthusians sought God's closeness in silence and solitude. The richly furnished dining room and the magnificent rococo church still present themselves today as if monks still lived and prayed in Ittingen. At the same time, the billiard table in the chapter hall tells of the dissolution of the monastery in 1848 and of the subsequent use of the place as the seat of a landlord's family. The topics and stories about the monastery and the Carthusian order are brought closer to a broad public by means of audio guides, radio plays for children and publications.
The outside area is also marked by monastic life, as visitors can experience the gardens of the Charterhouse on four themed paths. Those who wander through the gardens with their eyes wide open will repeatedly come across fragments of historical garden design in the midst of the flowering splendour of today's plants.
Thurgau Art Museum
With its top-class collection and attractive temporary exhibitions, the Kunstmuseum Thurgau provides an exciting counterpoint to the past idyll of the former monastery. The core of the museum is the cantonal art collection, which has existed since 1942. The museum manages a total of more than 30,000 collection objects, ranging from photography, drawings and paintings to large-scale installations. In addition, internationally renowned artists have developed new works especially for the context of Ittingen Charterhouse. Janet Cardiff's "Ittingen Walk" takes the public on an unconventional tour of the two museums. "The Silent Library" by Joseph Kosuth deals with the order of knowledge, while Muda Mathis in her "Paradise" retells the biblical story in a completely unconventional way.
The Kunstmuseum Thurgau maintains a rich mediation offer in the form of publications, guided tours and lectures. The offerings are aimed at a broad public, which includes schoolchildren as well as senior citizens.
