It's a project that started 1200 years ago.
Only a few blows with the fire steel and already it crackles quietly, as the blacksmith ignites his fire. The bellows breathe life into the fire and the working day begins in the monastery town "Campus Galli". At the other end of the site, the carpenter reaches for his axe, the handle of which nestles familiarly in his hand.
Day after day, we move forward a bit to build a monastery with the tools and materials of the early Middle Ages, as the monks of the island Reichenau drew it 1200 years ago in the "St.Galler Klosterplan". "Campus Galli" is a unique project to make Charlemagne's time visible and tangible!
Open-air museum and research project in one
"Campus Galli" is an open-air museum as well as a research project, because the daily, manual examination of the Middle Ages constantly raises new questions: What did an early medieval barn look like, how did one split shingles and how did one mix mortar? How much wood did a medieval pottery kiln need and what vegetables did we already have? Every day brings new challenges, every day is a little different in the monastery town "Campus Galli" near Meßkirch, the unique medieval construction site between the Danube and Lake Constance.
After more than five years, the Middle Ages have become everyday life for the craftsmen. This year, many long beams are needed to build a large barn, each of them handcrafted from an oak or spruce trunk. It will be the largest building on the medieval construction site to date.
Behind the market square is the wooden church with its cloister and the beautiful choir barriers inside. Next to it, in the wooden bell tower, hangs a locally cast bronze bell that rings daily for lunch. When potters and carpenters, gardeners and tailors and numerous other craftsmen take a breather, visitors can enjoy lentil stew, Dennetle (a kind of tarte flambée) or a sausage.
- Dogs are allowed on the premises but must remain on a leash for safety reasons (oxen!). Dog excrement must be removed and disposed of in a plastic bag in the garbage.
- The area consists of unpaved roads and is only accessible to wheelchair users and prams to a limited extent.
- Campus Galli is located in the south of Baden-Württemberg, about an hour's drive from Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance.
- Parking is available directly at the entrance.
- Bus lines 102 (from 01 April on Saturdays and Sundays) and 642 (also from 01 April on weekdays) also run to Campus Galli.
