An ideal starting point

The Salem Valley is one of the most beautiful holiday landscapes around Lake Constance. The municipality of Salem, with its 11 suburbs and a population of around 11,000, is an ideal starting point for the numerous excursion destinations around Lake Constance due to its central location. If you are looking for peace and relaxation, you will find the longed-for relaxation for body, mind and soul here in the magnificent Linzgau landscape with its diverse hiking and cycling opportunities.

Salem Castle and surroundings

It was not without reason that the monks of the Cistercian order settled in Salem in 1134 to found a monastery which quickly developed into one of the most influential in southern Germany. After secularisation, it became the seat of the Margraves of Baden.

Today Salem Castle is one of the most outstanding cultural monuments in Baden-Württemberg. The extensive grounds include Europe's largest fire brigade museum and the 1,000 m2 wine cellar of the margravial winery, where wines from the best locations on Lake Constance are vinified.

The landscape was also shaped by the monastery. The numerous small ponds, once used by the monks for fish farming, are now a diverse habitat for animals and plants.

Leisure activities in Salem

The famous baroque artist Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer settled near his largest client, the Salem Monastery. His former studio in Mimmenhausen was turned into a small but fine museum, which provides insights into the life and work of the artist.

The Affenberg offers fun for the whole family, an open-air enclosure with around 200 Barbary monkeys who enjoy being fed by the visitors. The idyllic grounds are also home to fallow deer and numerous storks.

If you fancy a cool dip, the spacious grounds at the Schlosssee Nature Adventure Park offer unlimited bathing fun for the whole family, with an extensive water area, extensive sunbathing lawns and a variety of play and sports facilities. The lovingly designed water and sand playground invite young visitors to play and romp extensively and a Robinson island offers numerous attractions for older children. A circular path with water jetties and vantage points makes the Schlosssee Nature Adventure Park a popular excursion destination even outside the bathing season.
