Welcome to Constance

Constance, the largest town on Lake Constance, blends art, nature, business and science. Combining tradition with a modern spirit, art with shopping, quality of life with quality of work, Constance is the vibrant centre of the region at the border between Germany, Austria, the Principality of Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

The historic old town with its picturesque alleys and facades is ideal for leisurely shopping, and the harbour with its Mediterranean feel and breath-taking views of the lake and the Alps is a great place for a stroll. Visitors looking to indulge in some regional food and drink are well-catered for in the bars and restaurants. With signature events such as the Lake Night Festival (Seenachtfest) and the Christmas market, top attractions such as Mainau island, and pleasure cruises on Lake Constance, there is something here for everyone.

In search of history

History is brought to life in Constance. Visitors can still find traces of the Council of Constance, the landmark event in the history of the town, which took place around 600 years ago (1414-1418). The Council building, the Imperia statue at the harbour, the Hus stone and other places of interest all have associations with this momentous medieval event. Venues such as the Rosgartenmuseum, the State Archaeological Museum and the Hus Museum bring history closer. Come and enjoy a trip back in time.

A cultural experience

The oldest town theatre in Germany, which has been putting on productions ever since 1607, and the South West German Philharmonic Orchestra are renowned for their excellent programmes throughout the year. Top events such as the Lake Festival (Seenachtsfest), Jazz in the Autumn, the Christmas market, the legendary carnival (Fasnacht) and many other cultural events provide entertainment for all tastes, whatever the season. Bodenseeforum, the brand new venue for conferences and events in Constance, is also well worth a visit.

Shopping, sightseeing and eating out

If you want to go shopping, eat out or visit the local attractions, Marktstätte square at the heart of Constance is the perfect starting point for a leisurely stroll around the picturesque town centre. More than 400 specialist shops in town and in LAGO, the largest shopping centre on Lake Constance, provide a high-quality mix of brands and stores. After a day’s shopping, you can unwind at one of the many cosy cafés, wine taverns and restaurants serving local cuisine, take in the amazing views of the lake and of the Alps from the harbour, or explore the charming alleys of the old town, for example in the Niederburg district. A visit to the underwater world of SEA LIFE Constance, a trip on a catamaran or a relaxing end to the day at the thermal baths – there are so many amazing things to see and do all year round.

Discover nature

Whether you prefer sailing, surfing, swimming, diving or canoeing, Constance offers many leisure activities on and around the lake. You can swim for free and enjoy lovely sunbathing lawns, playgrounds and restaurants at Horn beach, as well as at other lidos in Litzelstetten, Dingelsdorf and Wallhausen, all with direct access to the lake. In the picturesque countryside around Constance, walkers can enjoy exciting and varied routes along the water’s edge, through the forests and past flowering meadows. Keen cyclists and inline skaters are also spoilt for choice on the well-maintained and signposted cycle routes. Mainau island offers a full programme of events throughout the year, while Reichenau island and the idyllic villages nearby promise an experience close to nature. Both islands are well worth a visit.
